Fiction Narrative

You know, that thing that is due on Monday? Fiction and Narrative:  So here in AP Literature, we analyze author technique until you get sick of it, but what does it mean to be able to pick apart elements of author style and discover meaning in them?  Good question.  Does the ability to see that and explain it prove anything?  Good question.  I have my view on the answers to each of those, but I want you to pursue that particular question through your own inquiry.  How can you do that?  Write…See More

Write something yourself wherein you demonstrate your knowledge and ability to use those same literary techniques.

Here's the assignment:

AP Literature:  Fiction Narrative Assignment

Your major prose writing task this trimester will be the construction of a short fiction story (7,500 – 10,000 words) that demonstrates your…

Dear classes,

"Rear Window" is a classic of western film, lauded both for its cinematography as well as its acting.  Believe it or not, "The Birds" ends up on a lot of "Greatest Films of the Century" lists.  It really was pioneering in its filmic techniques:  Check out these people who really like it:

"Zeitgeist" - A German word meaning "The spirit of the times."

What is the spirit of these times?

If we'd had time to read 1984 in class, we'd have gotten a chance to discuss Orwell's caution about how information can be manipulated, therefore how truth can be manipulated.  In essence, in shorthand, your only defense against manipulation is to seek out your own streams of information and to be able to discern for yourself the "truthfulness" of your perceptions.

How do you do that?  You have to learn as much as you can while you have the time and resources to do so.  Demand resources of information that are open and free of corporate and government control.  Seek out the information that denies what you hold to be dogma.  Compare the two for yourself.

Demand to be allowed to think for yourself.

The Stranger ( I got nothing witty to add.)

Here are some links to our current reading.  I don't have much to say about this first link, other than that it looks like it was last updated in 1996 - but luckily Camus has been dead for a long time and this leaves little threat of the material being made out of date.  Actually, I'll make one more smart-ass comment and add that I had a professor who went to Swarthmore, the school that's promoting the site, and he is the most pompous, windy son of a bitch I've ever met.

This second link is to the Albert Camus Society of the UK.  Lots of good stuff if you give a damn.

Say, will you guys do that for me after I die?  The "Joseph Weber Society of the North American Continent"?
